Freedom in Prison by Madame Guyon

A little bird I am,
Shut from the fields of air;
And in my cage I sit and sing
To Him who place me there;
Well pleased a prisoner to be,
Because, my God, it pleases Thee.

My cage confines me round;
Abroad I cannot fly;
But though my wing is closely bound,
My heart’s at liberty.
My prison walls can not control
The flight, the freedom of my soul.

Oh, it is good to soar
These bolts and bars above,
To Him whose purpose I adore,
Whose providence I love:
And in thy mighty will to find
The joy, the freedom of the mind.

    I am preparing a booklet on "Learning to Suffer God's Way." The booklet will be included in an international ministry offering that will reach out to those who are suffering throughout the world for various reasons. I am including Madame Guyon's poem, Freedom in Prison, as shown above. To give an accurate citation and, as needed, a permission use statement, I need to know who holds the copyright to this poem, or is it in the public domain? Can you give such a permission? You early response is appreciated. Thank you.

      Hi Donald, Most, if not all, of her books are in the public Domain. There are actually 2 different versions of this poem. One is actually a hymn. The other you find on this website. Here are 2 links to the hymn. http://books.google.com/books?id=smYiQx120gYC&pg=PA279&dq=freedom+from+prison+guyon&hl=en&sa=X&ei=xwtsU4OXN8OpyAT_sIDwCA&ved=0CDMQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=freedom%20from%20prison%20guyon&f=false http://www.hymnal.net/en/hymn/h/724 Whether it's in the public domain or not..I am not sure. More than likely it is. If it wasn't public domain, I would not have posted it here on this website without a copyright citation, unless by accident. I would love to seek the booklet when it is finished if possible. Blessings in the Lord, Michelle

  • “I never felt such an entire emptiness of self-love, or any regard to any private, selfish interest of my own. It seemed to me, that I had entirely done with myself. I felt that the opinions of the world concerning me were nothing, and that I had no more to do with any outward interest of my own, than with that of a person whom I never saw. The glory of God seemed to be all, and in all, and to swallow up every wish and desire of my heart” – Sarah Edwards, wife of Jonathan Edwards

Verse of the Day

For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. — Romans 13:6-7 (NKJV)
