Prayers Ancient and Modern 06/12

O Lord, Faithful Creator, give us grace, we entreat Thee, in well doing and with full assurance of faith, to commit the keeping of our souls to Thee, and rest in Thy promises. And help us that we may always speak the truth; and though it be to our own hindrance, keep faith one with another—Amen.

Christina G. Rossetti.

O God, grant that for the time to come, I may yield a cheerful obedience to all Thy appointments. Remember me in the day of trouble; keep me from all excess of fear, concern, and sadness. Grant me an humble and resigned heart, that, with perfect control I may ever acquiesce in all the methods of Thy grace; that I may never frustrate the designs of Thy mercy by unreasonable fears, by sloth, or self-love—Amen.

Thomas Wilson (1663–1755).

  • “I never felt such an entire emptiness of self-love, or any regard to any private, selfish interest of my own. It seemed to me, that I had entirely done with myself. I felt that the opinions of the world concerning me were nothing, and that I had no more to do with any outward interest of my own, than with that of a person whom I never saw. The glory of God seemed to be all, and in all, and to swallow up every wish and desire of my heart” – Sarah Edwards, wife of Jonathan Edwards
