Amy Carmichael Quotes

The Faith that nothing can dismay

The Hope no disappointments tire

The Passion that’ll burn like fire

Let me not sink to be a clod

Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God”

— Amy Carmichael

“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.” — Amy Carmichael
“It is a safe thing to trust Him to fulfill the desires which He creates” — Amy Carmichael

“We profess to be strangers and pilgrims, seeking after a country of our own, yet we settle down in the most un-stranger-like fashion, exactly as if we were quite at home and meant to stay as long as we could. I don’t wonder apostolic miracles have died. Apostolic living certainly has.” — Amy Carmichael
“Blessed are the single-hearted, for they shall enjoy much peace. If you refuse to be hurried and pressed, if you stay your soul on God, nothing can keep you from that clearness of spirit which is life and peace. In that stillness you will know what His will is.” — Amy Carmichael

“But God is the God of the waves and the billows, and they are still His when they come over us; and again and again we have proved that the overwhelming thing does not overwhelm. Once more by His interposition deliverance came. We were cast down, but not destroyed.” — Amy Carmichael

“I wish thy way.
And when in me myself should rise,
and long for something otherwise,

And slay.”

Thy heart be troubled,
Neither let it be afraid.”

“Bare heights of loneliness…a wilderness whose burning winds sweep over glowing sands, what are they to HIM? Even there He can refresh us, even there He can renew us.” — Amy Carmichael

O fret not thyself nor let Thy heart be troubled,
Neither let it be afraid.”
— Amy Carmichael
“I wish Thy way.
But when in me myself would rise
And long for something otherwise
Then, Holy One, take sword and spear
And slay.” — Amy Carmichael
“If our children were to grow up truthful they much be taught by those who had a regard for truth; and not just a casual regard, a delicate regard. On this point we were adamant.” — Amy Carmichael (Gold Cord)

“All life’s training is just exactly what is needed for the true Life-work, still out of view but far away from none of us. Don’t grudge me the learning of a new lesson.” — Amy Carmichael
“We knew our Father. There was no need for persuasion. Would not His Fatherliness be longing to give us our hearts’ desire (if I may put it so)? How could we press Him as though He were not our own most loving Father?” — Amy Carmichael
If I am content to heal a hurt slightly, saying “Peace, peace,” where is no peace; if I forget the poignant word “Let love be without dissimulation” and blunt the edge of truth, speaking not right things but smooth things, then I know nothing of Calvary love. –Amy Carmichael

“O Lamb of God, deliver me…”

From subtle love of softening things,

From easy choices, weakenings,

(Not thus are spirits fortified,

Not this way went the Crucified)

From all that dims Thy Calvary

O Lamb of God, deliver me.

~Amy Carmichael

I wish Thy way. But when in me myself would rise, And long for something otherwise. Then, Holy One, take sword and spear, And slay. – Amy Carmichael

“Pray that we may enter into that travail of soul with Him. Nothing less is any good. Spiritual children mean travail of soul-spiritual agony.”- Amy Carmicheal

While she’s inside the Belfast tea shop, outside she saw a small girl, barefoot&hardly clad, shivered in the cold rain. Then she whispered, “When I grow up and money have, I know what I will do, I’ll build a great big lovely place, For little girls like you.” -Amy Carmicheal

“Satan is so much more in earnest than we are–he buys up the opportunity while we are wondering how much it will cost.” – Amy Carmichael

We say, then, to anyone who is under trial, give Him time to steep the soul in His eternal truth. Go into the open air, look up into the depths of the sky, or out upon the wideness of the sea, or on the strength of the hills that is His also; or, if bound in the body, go forth in the spirit; spirit is not bound. Give Him time and, as surely as dawn follows night, there will break upon the heart a sense of certainty that cannot be shaken. – Amy Carmichael

If my attitude be one of fear, not faith, about one who has disappointed me; if I say, “Just what I expected,” if a fall occurs, then I know nothing of Calvary love. – Amy Carmichael

“The night I sailed for China, March 3, 1893, my life, on the human side, was broken, and it never was mended again. But He has been enough.” – Amy Carmichael

What is the secret to great living? Entire separation to Christ and devotion to Him.  Thus speaks every man and woman whose life has made more than a passing flicker in the spiritual realm.  It is the life that has no time for trifling that counts.”- Amy Carmichael

“If you would live in victory.…you must refuse to be dominated by the seen and the felt.” -Amy Carmichael

“What is the secret to great living? Entire separation to Christ and devotion to Him. Thus speaks every man and woman whose life has made more than a passing flicker in the spiritual realm. It is the life that has no time for trifling that counts.”~Amy Carmichael

‘Little buds that float and open on the water, lifting young innocent faces up to the light…gathered…. and crushed underfoot. But the little Lotus Buds are His – His and not another’s, and she consecrated herself again to gather some of those flowers and offer them to their true Owner.’ – [Taken from the book ‘Lotus Buds’ written by Amy Carmichael]

“There may be love, understanding love, all around us, and yet we may be needing some word of life in our own soul, something that would do what only the Divine can do. “Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.” – Amy Carmichael

“If we do not want those veils, He will clear them away. He has given us power of our wills. If the will be set towards beholding, looking, reflecting, then our Lord will see to the veils.” – Amy Carmichael

Thee will I sing, for sing I must;

Thy good and comfortable word

Hath raised my spirit from the dust.”

How often, Lord, our grateful eyes
Have seen what Thou hast done,

How often does Thy love surprise

From dawn to set of sun.

-Amy C.

It is not far to go,

For Thou art here;

And not by traveling, Lord,
Men come to Thee,
But by the way of love;

And we love Thee.”

A centipede was happy till one day, a toad in fun said, ‘Pray, which leg goes after which?’ Which strained his mind to such a pitch he lay distracted in a ditch, considering how to run. I think there are a good many toads in the world, and sometimes, not in fun at all but very seriously, they manage “to strain our minds to such a pitch”, that instead of going on in simplicity we may easily find ourselves distracted in a ditch, not running, but only considering how to run. -Amy Carmichael

O Thou who art my quietness, my deep repose,
My rest from strife of tongues, my holy hill,
Fair is Thy pavilion, where I hold me still.
Back let them fall from me, my clamorous foes,
Confusions multiplied;
From crowding things of sense I flee, and in Thee hide.
Until this tyranny be overpast,
Thy hand will hold me fast;
What though the tumult of the storm increase,
Grant to Thy servant strength, O Lord, and bless with peace.
– Amy Carmichael

“I don’t pray for milk biscuits for the Dohnavur Family, all cut to a pattern and stamped with a single decorous pretty stamp. So many places, to judge by results, seem to be great biscuit manufacturers and they turn out tidy boxes of biscuits. I pray for soldiers, not biscuits!” – Amy Carmichael

“Can we accept the unexplained, the loss,
The crushing agony, and hold us still.
And nowhere is that clearer vision given
Which pierces a bewildering providence,
And opens windows upon highest heaven,
But where we see Suffering Omnipotence.”
– Amy Carmichael

Hi, wonderful collection, I am trying to source a quote attributed to A.C by Elisabeth Elliot 'ALL THAT WAS EVER OURS IS OURS FOR EVER' it's quoted in a book by E Elliot.

Hi brother, is this the quote? http://books.google.com/books?id=b1tcIUAfxJcC&pg=PA116&lpg=PA116&dq=ALL+THAT+WAS+EVER+OURS+IS+OURS+FOREVER+elisabeth+elliot&source=bl&ots=2mKc5jG4rZ&sig=nEyBTkZ3laeoB_AaUc6XjcL7o2k&hl=en&sa=X&ei=hGYTT7e9KqH_sQKztLTHAw&ved=0CD0Q6AEwBA#v=onepage&q&f=false Thanks for sharing with us.

Was nice to read more of her quotes. Listening to Leonard Ravenhill's messages he would quote her at times. Especially the 1st one above, "Give me the Love..." is one I had to memorize after hearing it. And this page reminded me of the other one I liked as well, "From all that dims Thy Calvary, O Lamb of God deliver me." Wow! what a prayer to daily keep in our hearts. Thanks also for having the Mary Peckham video on her testimony of the Hebrides revival. I heard Duncan Campbell's account maybe 8 yrs ago. It's one of those things not easily forgotten. Was blessed to hear another's personal testimony of the same spiritual awakening. Thank you!

  • Brian says:

Thanks! Thats the second place I have seen it quoted. I'm hoping to find where she actually wrote it herself. It may be an impossible task. Brian

“All that was ever ours is ours forever: Glory of greenwood and the shining river, Joy of companionship of kindred mind; All, all is ours. It is not left behind Among the withered things that must decay; It is stored up for us, somewhere, and for another day.” - from Mountain Breezes: A collection of poems by Amy Carmichael :)

      • Bill says:

Thanks! I, too, had been looking for the source of this quote for decades, since I first read it, probably in Elizabeth Elliot's book.

        • Brian rainford says:

I've found an old book called WHEN THE MOUNTAINS SHAKE and the poem is listed toward the end of the book under the title, When our yesterdays pull at our hearts. Words of life speak in all times and cultures don't they?!

      • Brian says:

Thank you! and I had it on my shelf all the time. Brian

  • Katariina says:

Spiritual wisdom only comes through the narrow path.....Thank you Holy Spirit for using Amy and teaching me too. Lord lead me on the path you set out before me, as you led Amy on hers. And help me to rest in you and hear your voice speaking to me, as it does each one of us, if we listen hard enough.

    • womenof7 says:

Goods words Katarina. Thank you sister for them. What a wonderful thing it would have been to have known/met Amy Carmichael, and/or visit Dohnavur when she was there.

  • volleyball chick says:

  • Jessica says:

    What's her most famous quote?

    • womenof7 says:

This is the one that I have seen the most in other places. "If a sudden jar can cause me to speak an impatient, unloving word, then I know nothing of Calvary love. For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill even one drop of bitter water, however suddenly jolted." It's from her book called "If"

  • Jessica says:
